Expert Committee of the Federal Government

Pursuant to Section 23 (1) of the German Act on the Protection of Cultural Property (Kulturgutschutzgesetz, KGSG), an export licence is required to export national cultural property on a permanent basis. Licences of this kind can be issued only by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media following consultation of the Expert Committee of the Federal Government. Applications for export licences will be refused if – after weighing up the circumstances of the individual case – serious and overriding concerns relating to Germany’s cultural heritage are deemed to exist.
